May 2019

Year 2 has been very busy lately with Summer Show preparation, class projects, and classwork! Everyone has been working very hard! This week everyone shared their “Protect Our Earth” project and we had a variety of presentations! We saw fantastic 3D models, original songs, poems, stories, shows, power points and poster projects. It was obvious that everyone had worked hard and prepared well.



In class, we are continuing to learn about new topics. In science, we are exploring habitats and microhabitats which ties very well into our summer show theme. In geography, we are learning all about Kenya! Students have enjoyed exploring the physical geography of Kenya as well as cultural aspects. In maths, we are building upon previously learned addition and subtraction skills by adding and subtracting three digit numbers! Just a reminder, Eduten Playground is still



available online and students may continue to login for extra maths practice at home. Currently, a unit on word problems is available.

Learning new skills!

 This Spring term we are really getting into our learning stride here in Year 3!

 In literacy we’ve been looking at different ways to expand our vocabulary to make our writing more creative and interesting or our readers.




 We’ve been using thesauruses and dictionaries in groups and individually to make sure we choose the best words possible!







 In science we’ve conducted some blind experiments to put our sense of touch to the test! We made a carousel of boxes, each with a different object in to feel and describe – we were pretty good and got most of our guesses for the contests of the boxes correct!



 We’ve also been lucky enough to have a special visitor come to talk to the class – Naval Commander Will - who spent part of a morning with us teaching us all about life on board a submarine!

 We got to learn all about daily life and the cramped conditions, as well as all the amazing sights that Will has been lucky enough to see in his time in the Navy.
We even got to look at his nautical maps and try out some of his specialist uniform!

In January, Year 3 worked in teams to produce some wonderful poetry based around the idea of a visit to the beach.
 
We did some fantastic brainstorming of vocabulary about beaches and thought of some powerful metaphors and similes to make our poems as powerful as possible.

  Everyone in Year 2 has been working very hard to create amazing projects recently! Projects are a wonderful way for students to express their own individuality, learn something new and practice public speaking. Now that we are nearly midway through term 2 we are trying to focus more on independent work with projects. This doesn’t mean that they should be completing everything alone, guidance is encouraged! But they should be completing the projects mostly on their own and should be able to explain how they made it.







  Last week’s projects about inventors were fantastic! Everyone learned about a vast variety of inventions ranging from legos to the piano! We also had a lovely visit from Simon and Mateo’s Dad.


                    

  We also had a lovely visit from Simon and Mateo’s Dad. He taught everyone about submarines and what it’s like to live and work on one. It was a very fun and interesting morning!

   

  In Science class we are continuing to learn about some amazing scientists! This week we are focusing on Louis Pasteur his discoveries regarding germs! On Monday we conducted an experiment that showed us how quickly we pass our germs around if we don’t wash our hands! Using only a bowl of glitter (the “germs”), everyone was amazed at how fast they move!

   Last week reception class explored the topic of ‘jobs’ in our lessons. We began by discussing different types of professions in morning Circle Time, and then sharing what each child would like to be when they grow up. We had many examples; from police officer to inventor! I was flattered to hear a few students telling me they would love to be a teacher like me, as they have so much fun at school.
 
  Reception had the chance to use their imagination for a ‘Doctor’s Office’, roleplay, where students took turns acting as doctor or patient, helping to diagnose problems such as colds or broken arms! Reception class were caring and attentive in their role, and I am sure they would make fantastic doctors one day.

                 


  Reception enjoyed learning more about new careers, and as an end-of-week treat, they all dressed up in different career costumes and enacted what they thought the job consisted of. We had some competent hairdressers, and some interesting meals created by our ‘chefs’! We interviewed each job role, and asked questioned about what the career consisted of – we had some fantastic answers! Overall, reception class learned how varied and fun jobs can be, which leads into our exciting topic this week of ‘The Life of a Chef’ – we can’t wait!

January in Year 1!           
Term 2 January 2019  

  We have had a great start to our new term with a jam packed January! We loved sharing our Christmas Diary homework projects during the first week back.
         



  We have been keeping warm doing lots of sports including a penguin obstacle course with Miss Amelia’s class.
                       

  We had a lovely trip to the Reina Sofia which has been so helpful when we have started talking about different materials for our science project.  We were able to see lots of different materials being used in the museum and have been learning about metal, plastic, paper, wood, glass, rock and water; how it feels and looks.

             

  In art we have been learning about Monet and looking at some of his famous impressionist paintings.  Last term we learnt all about how to draw our portrait but this term we are looking at landscapes. We recreated our own versions of Monet’s famous garden paintings using finger painting and then using cotton wool buds for the smaller details.

 
 



   

  The School Day of Non Violence and Peace is celebrated each year on the 30th January. To mark this day we watched a presentation and then discussed ways in which we can be peaceful in the classroom as well as throughout our lives.  We created beautiful white doves as a craft activity and wrote inside our ideas about what peace is.

Reception trip to Reina Sofia!

On Wednesday this week, Reception and Year 1 took an exciting visit to the impressive Reina Sofia Museum. As soon as we left the school bus, the children were mystified by the beautiful building, which holds two glass elevators that seem to reach all the way to the sky. Once inside, we were met by two lovely tour guides, who explained to reception class that the artwork they were about to see had much potential for imagination and games! For example, Richard Serra’s famous sculpture piece ‘Equal-Parallel’ were not just boring grey blocks – but were in fact the perfect place to play Hide and Seek!

  
 
After walking through the gorgeous courtyard and admiring the huge Alexander Calder sculpture (which the children pointed out looked just like an ‘Autumn Tree’), the classes were told to “look for some funny faces in the gallery”. Sure enough, we passed a collection of head sculptures, each pulling a unique expression, which the children had to mimic. They then had the fun challenge of creating their own ‘funny face’ and then mirroring it with a partner – which made for some great photos! The children also got to show off their creativity with a dance session, the class stood before a simple video of a ballerina moving her arms and legs while lying on the back, the reception copied her movements while following lines on a mat beneath them, making for some graceful dancing.

 

 
Finally, after admiring and contemplating more interesting artworks, we were led outside next to Roy Lichtenstein impressive sculpture ‘Brushstroke’, and reception loved its’ cartoonish style. Our guides used chalk to draw some simple fun games on the ground, which we then re-created once we returned to school in our own playground.
 
   

Overall, it was a spectacular day out for reception class, with many students saying they can’t wait to visit the gallery again!

Year 1 Trip to Reina Sofia!

This week Y1 had an exciting morning out of the classroom, exploring the wonderful sights in the Reina Sofia Museum!

   


We were joined by Miss Amelia and the Reception class for the trip to the museum.

We arrived at the museum and met our two lovey tour guides for the morning.  After everyone had introduced themselves we went to see the first sculpture.  We went into a large room and saw the Richard Serra sculpture, ‘Equal Parallel’.  The two guides asked us what games we could imagine playing in this large space with the steel blocks breaking up the room.  Of course hide and seek was the obvious choice! We had lots of fun playing games in this room before moving outside to the patio.  Here we looked at the Alexander Calder, ‘Carmen’ sculpture.  This is a large monumental, standing mobile that moves with the wind much like the leaves of a tree do.  The colours are red and yellow and the children were able to tell me that it looks like an autumn tree with red and yellow leaves, floating around in the wind.

Later we stopped to look at some sculptures of silly faces in one of the corridors of the museum.  The tour guides showed us a funny game we could play using the sculptures as inspiration.  In pairs we pretended one of us was a mirror and mimicked exactly the face the other was pulling.  This certainly led to some interesting faces!
 
 
The final sculpture we stopped to look at was the Luciana Fabro, ‘Piede di vetro’.  This was a very obscure piece; a large glass foot with a long silk leg attached and nobody knows which animal it could be! Our guesses were dinosaur, monster or even a huge chicken! We listened to a beautiful story that out tour guides told us whilst we sat by this sculpture and then shared our own ideas about who or what this large foot could belong to.
 
 
As our trip came to an end we were able to go outside the museum and play in the courtyard.  Our tour guides taught us several new games and we used chalk to mark out the games on the ground.
 
 
When we were back at school and settled back into the classroom in the afternoon, we discussed the different materials we had seen at the museum; steel, glass, silk and many more, and how we can use examples from this trip to help is in our new science topic, materials.  We were also able to join with the reception class again during afternoon break and use the chalks outside to play some of the new games we had learnt.



      

We even tried making some of our own sculptures using the blocks in the playground.

"IF I WAS A MOVEMENT"

 
We had a wonderful visit last Tuesday to the Reina Sofia museum for a fun and educational workshop related to art, movement and expression. All of the year 2 students were on their best behavior as our guides showed us all different sculptures and paintings in a very creative way with music and movement.



Some students volunteered themselves to show the class how certain pieces of art made them feel using their own movements!



Some of the artwork we saw seemed brighter and more upbeat while others seemed slower and quieter. Everyone had to translate this into their own movements in their own unique way! After touring the museum, we ended with a very fun game involving a big square with different shapes inside. Everyone got to participate in a fun game that involved different movements and sounds.




Another fun part of our trip was seeing the artwork of artists we are learning about in class! Everyone was able to see some of Eduardo Chillida’s sculptures in person! Along with the works of Picasso and Dali.
 
Year 2 will definitely be using all of the fun things we learned at the Reina Sofia back at British Prince School!
